PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Staneco was contracted to design a control system for a test reactor for a pharmaceutical company. The reactor consisted of a reaction chamber which controlled temperature and the flow of gases. The reaction was set up by the operator. The PLC then controlled the temperature and flow rates of the gases. A computer kept track of temperature and gas flows over time while the program displayed the information on a trend chart and created Excel files for later reference. One of the gases was hydrogen so knowledge of safety standards and practices was critical in designing safety interlocks into the system.

PROJECT OUTCOME:
Following installation of the new reactor control system, operators praised the ease of use and data accumulation abilities. Having the system automated also increased the safety since an automated shutdown procedure was added.
